The Burn of Winter Itch

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

I love a hot shower. I mean I love it scalding, pounding and endless. (A shower that is.) One would think that showering is primarily a solitude act but my family has made a sport of finding me in my private moments. Even the dog seems to know the minute I step into the bathroom and takes it as a cue to intrude.
SO it just seems unfair that one of my favorite indulgences (one of the few that does not cause weight gain, I might add) does cause the most annoying winter itch.
Grant it, not as bad as pregnancy itch but a nuisance just the same.

Give me Some Water

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

For most of my adult life I have been trying to lose weight or at least not gain weight. I know that drinking water really helps me in this endeavor but I also know that I really don’t like drinking water, especially in the winter. Now I’ve decided not to drink out of plastic bottles for the environment and all this possible crazy plastic cancer stuff so I am really struggling getting the water down. I am not the only one, especially in winter.
Our bodies are made up of almost 70% water and we lose about 8-9 cups a day to replace fluid loss through the skin, going the bathroom and even just breathing.
We have these same losses in the winter but many people don’t drink as much because they are not sweating or feel hot. They don’t drink enough and become easily dehydrated.

Ask Dr. Deb? How old is too old for period to start?

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

Jill Writes:
My daughter turned 16 in November and still does not have her period. She is very athletic. Should I worry about this?
I remember reading,  “Are you there God it’s Me, Margaret?” when I was about 10. I couldn’t wait to get my period. Now I can’t wait for it to go away.
Seems like when the period starts in a girl is a major news bulletin and there can be a lot of concern if it is not right on time. That time may be dictated by when all of her friends started but the reality is there is  about a 7 year time frame that girls start their period. (more…)

Holiday Stress Less

Friday, December 19th, 2008

My 5-year-old daughter jumped on Santa’s lap on Sunday and told him, “I want a pink DS?” The good news is I have on top authority that there will be a pink DS under the Christmas tree. The bad news is that I also know it will have her 7 year old sister’s name on it and not hers.  I kept wondering about all of the Bratz things that she wanted two weeks ago and were already wrapped!

The thing about the holidays is, that no matter how hard you try, it won’t be the perfect white Christmas that only exists in Hallmark movies. Kids change their minds, in-laws are annoying and walking through the Festival of Lights with your husband is not nearly as romantic as you thought it would be when you were lonely and didn’t have a boyfriend.
