You are not crazy….Just perimenopausal!!

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Did you ever get old overnight?
Where did these wrinkles come from? How come I can’t read without squinting? Why does my family think I am a bitch? Is it hot in here? Why can’t I sleep? When is my period going to come..or stop? Why do I eat the same but gain weight?
Am I crazy? No, you are just in perimenopause, my dear.
The really crazy thing is when you go to talk to your doctor about it he tells you, ”There is nothing wrong with you” or “You just have to live with it.”
That is simply not true and I think part of the reason why Susan Somers and bioidentical hormones have become so popular. The doctors are not listening, so patients are going to what appears “safer and more natural” which I hate to say, is not necessarily true. (more…)

Ask Dr. Deb..Pain with Intercourse and Spina Bifida

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Dr. Deb,

I am a Spina Bifida patient, and have had 8 back operations as a result. I haven’t been sexually active in quite sometime; but in the past I have noticed major pain during intercourse. I have a throbbing pain and burning sensation that continues after intercourse especially if Orgasm happens. I do not know the cause because I have not tested positive for any STDs. I wanted to know if my nerve damage could be the problem?

Tarah

Dear  Tarah,

Pain with intercourse is known as dyspareunia. Some women have pain deep inside where their pelvic organs are, inside the vagina called vaginismus or just on the outside which is called the vulvadynia. (more…)

Let Your Monkey Breathe

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

It’s summer and the sun is shining and women are hanging out in their bathing suits all day so the vaginal infections abound. It reminds me of a patient that I had named Jennifer. Jennifer is an 18 year old high school student that has returned to my office numerous times for yeast infections.  She comes today with her mother, who is concerned about the recurrent problem. We have treated her successfully with medications in the past, yet the infection continues to occur. I begin to question her about the lifestyle changes that I have recommended.  When she states that she is still wearing her underwear at night, her mother scolds, “I told you, Jenny, you’ve got to let your monkey breathe!”  While I had never heard that expression, I certainly will never forget it.  I do believe that they are words to live by.
